Our immune system is essentially a finely orchestrated system. Our body cells need to be protected from bacteria, allergens, viruses, foreign protein substances and others. These things are collectively called as antigens. Skin and its associated membranes are the primary defence mechanism against antigens and most of them can be stopped right here. However, deeper inside our body, we can find cells that actively protect our body. One of them is T-lymphocytes and it patrols the body continuously to search for potentially harmful antigens. It is supported by other nearly similar cells.

B-lympcytes are needed to manufacture powerful antibodies. Antibodies are essential special blood proteins that can destroy and neutralize germs. Macrophages and neutrophils are definitely useful for scavenging antigens from our body. Antigens will be disposed by our lymphatic system. These cells can protect our body and we will be kept in tip top shape. It is important for us to nurture an effective immune system and we could achieve this by having a balanced diet. Also, good diet will allow us to have strong vascular system and this is important to let white blood cells to circulate throughout our body.

Bloodstream is the pathway where germ-fighting cells are able to travel throughout our body. White blood cells and other antibodies will concentrate in areas where they are needed. When there’s an outbreak of flu and cold in the area, it is a good idea for us to have balanced and healthy diet. This will make sure that we have proper immunity. Our plate should be filled with enough vegetables and fruits. These foods are rich in vitamins and phytochemicals. It is also a good idea to consume up to nine servings of vegetables and fruits each day. This will maximize the amount of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins that we consume. In order to simplify things, we could choose two different bright or deep colors of fruits and vegetables each day. We should obtain much our carbohydrate from beans and whole grains; while avoiding simple carbohydrates; such as sugar and carbonated beverages.

We should also choose lean protein sources and amino acids are the building blocks of white blood cells and other cells in our body. It means that during critical times, protective cells can multiply and grow at a desired rate to combat the infection. An open wound could be inhabited by millions of rapidly multiplying pathogens, so immune cells need to increase their numbers to avoid being overwhelmed. In essence, we need amino acids and other essential proteins to increase the proliferation of immune cells. Each day, we should consume one gram of protein from lean sources multiplied by per kilogram of our body weight. So, if we are 75kg; we will need to consume at least 75 grams of good protein. We should avoid obtaining protein from meat that’s rich in saturated fat. Good and healthier sources of protein are chicken breast, fish, soy products, beans and lentils.
